Podcast

In this podcast I worked with Aleina Roe and Olivia Courtright. We created a podcast on Adobe Premiere Pro talking about our "Roman Empires" with celebrity drama. A Roman Empire in today's terms is something that a person thinks of constantly. In this podcast I talked about the drama between Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez, which was mainly because of Haileys husband Justin Bieber who was Selena Gomez's ex. Olivia talked about the controversy regarding Colleen Hoover's books, because she has gotten a lot of hate recently, and multiple allegations were spread about her. Finally, Aleina talked about two actors off of Grey's Anatomy named Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo. They had chemistry on set for the series since their characters were dating, but allegedly had chemistry off set as well even though they both had loving partners and children.

Podcast Reflection:

1. Explain how your production skills developed throughout this project.

At first, I was unsure how to record just my voice then put it on a flash drive. Thankfully with the help of others I was able to figure it out then upload to adobe. When starting at first, we had trouble with the mics and how to structure our podcast. Eventually, we were able to figure out the mics and how to add tracks, move/ adjust sounds, and copy it over to Schoology. This has also helped my productions skills, because I was able to identify different elements of sound and how to use and identify them in a media text.

2. Explain how you started from level zero and improved to intermediate level in Audition.

During our first ever project with adobe I didn’t even understand how to import pictures and videos onto a flash drive, let alone know how to edit on an advanced platform. I started first by learning how to import videos on adobe, then put sound and text over it For the podcast I was then able to at least get on adobe and import a few files. With help I was able to create different tracks for sound effects, dialogue, music, etc. Then I played around with the app, adjusting the sounds, and times to create a 10+ minute podcast as my result.

3. Share the processes of PLANNING, PRODUCTION, AND EDITING; and

 4. Share the process of team collaboration and idea generating.

First, Aleina, Olivia, and I took two class periods to figure out what we wanted to talk about which ended up being the topic of our “Roman Empires”, which is basically something you think about a lot. We then decided that we wanted our podcast to be more specific and organized, so we started talking about celebrity drama as our Roman Empire. We all decided to talk about something we were more familiar with. This gave us the conclusion that Olivia was going to talk about Colleen Hoover (a famous author), Aleina was going to talk about the supposed affair between off-screen actors on Greys Anatomy, and I would be talking about the drama between two celebrities, Selena Gomez, and Hailey Bieber. During the production we went to the AICE Office and started talking about our topics and pitching in our opinions between recordings. We ended up having to re-record a few things, but left with an introduction, our three topics, and a closing recording. The next day, we went outside and started recording sound effects and stings for our podcast. For editing, we all imported our creations and started putting things into the place we thought would sound best. We created three separate tracks to keep things organized. One was for dialogue, another was for sound effects and stings, and the last was for our opening and closing monologue and incidental music. After, we adjusted the sound and had some moments where music would fade out. We listened to it once more to make sure we liked it, then saved and submitted it to Schoology.

5. Explain how you faced problems and technical limitations and how you overcame them.

Very few times have we had some conflicting ideas with one another but were able to come to a conclusion we would all agree with. For example, when finding our theme music Olivia and I wanted a very bright and electronic sound with words, but Aleina disagreed and said we shouldn’t have any words in our music. We then were able to continue searching for different theme music and found one we all liked. On other days we were confused about what our next steps would be, and it was stressful trying to figure out what to do when we had no idea where we were going. We were able to make It past this by talking it out and getting help from other people.

6. Explain the elements of sound that you incorporated and how they add extra layers of meaning.

-Theme music: We put this in the beginning of our podcast as an upbeat bell ringing sound and then opened with our monologue saying “I hope you’ve had a bright and shining day...” This added a nice intro to our podcast and added a line relating to it making the podcast have a more funny and happy tone.

-Stings: We added little ding sounds between talking about our subjects to signify our time to talk was over, then transitioned into the next clip of someone talking.

-Incidental music: After our opening we put in a very happy and upbeat song before the first person started talking about their subject. This showed more of the tone of our podcast and once again led to someone talking.

-Sound Effects: We added sound effects in towards the end after our closing clip by first adding an applause to show the podcast was over, then adding footsteps that slowly decrescendo out, again to signify the end of our podcast.

-Dialogue: Throughout the podcast while talking about our subjects, others would pitch in something about that topic, causing dialogue between us, since we are adding and talking more about each other's ideas.

-Opening Monologue: We added our opening monologue right after the theme music faded, so we could show a well-organized introduction to the podcast.

-Sound Mixing: To use sound mixing we adjusted our clips to form the podcast, to again have it organized. We also adjusted the sound, so it wasn’t too quiet or loud. This helps the podcast flow better and gives it structure.

Week 9: Finishing on Adobe

This week on Adobe I worked to completely finish the editing portion of the film project. Olivia was able to find audios to go with the film, so I imported the audios and placed them where I thought they would be good, and where Olivia had suggested putting them. I also needed to figure out with the audio how to adjust some clips. So, I asked Mr. Z how and just learned how to audio gain on certain clips. I adjusted the sound on the music I imported to be louder in some areas or be quieter in order to hear the original audio at the same time. Also, with sound in the same clip being louder I could either take the eraser tool and snip that portion then adjust the audio gain, or I had Mr. Z show me how to adjust the sound of one part of a clip by dragging points into the sound and adjusting those points, which was smoother than just snipping it. After this, to make the audio smoother I included exponential fades into the audio to either fade the sound in or out. I...
