Film Genre Research- Scream 5 (2022) Opening Scene

Camera shots, Angles, and Movements:

In this opening we can experience the trill of an eerie set of events. To begin, in this opening we see a girl named Tara receiving a phone call from an unknown number which shows an over the shoulder shot of the home phone ringing. While she is talking to this stranger on a home phone, she is also messaging her friend Amber. This is what first introduces some of the main characters. When Tara is messaging her friend Amber off her phone we can identify a close up shot of their text conversation to show what their messages are saying back and forth. This continues to occur over the time Tara is talking to the stranger. Eventually the unknown caller reveals that the person she's texting is actually him and not her friend Amber. This adds a small plot twist in the beginning and causes the audience to feel confused and worried. To show Tara it is not Amber she is messaging, the stranger sends her a video of a closed handheld shot that pictures amber getting ready in her bedroom. This shot is taken from outside her window and is used to give the description that he took her phone and is outside her bedroom window stalking her. This then goes into a close up shallow shot of Tara looking confused and frightened. This is occurs to give the audience the same feeling Tara is experiencing.

Editing Techniques and Tone:

Overall, the editing in this opening gives off a warmer color palette, but does not utilize a bright set of colors most likely displaying that the time is in the evening. This scene uses a darker set of warm colors except when the light of Tara's phone is shown. When Tara is messaging Amber, the background of the phone is blurred and dark, while the colors on her phone are very bright and the texts back and forth are green and blue. The light of Tara's phone is also seen to reflect on her face to signal her phone is currently on with most likely her messages to Amber. In the scene there are also many more short takes jumping between Tara, the home phone ringing, and her texts with Amber. There was also a few crosscutting and parallel editing techniques used, typically when Tara went to grab the home phone or check outside. This type of editing style and choice of colors is used to show Tara trying to be safe and cozy in her household by giving the screen a warm color tone. By making this warmer color palette a bit darker it is also used to show the chilling scenery the movie has tried to create with the creepy unknown caller.

Sound Techniques:

In the beginning there is an ambient melodic sound playing in the background of the house to show the unamusing normal night a person would have on a daily basis. This calming older music plays throughout most of the opening scene. Tara is then seen taking a breath out of her inhaler most likely hinting that she may have asthma. This is interrupted when the sound effect of the phone ringing is enhanced to be much louder than the music in the background. Tara doesn't immediately answer the irritating sound of the phone ringing and instead texts her friend Amber letting her know someone is calling her. Tara then picks up the phone and clicks a button to answer it. Her irritated voice is met with another mans slow and deep voice that sounds a bit muffled creating the effect of talking over the phone. Tara talks to this stranger who she thinks is her moms boyfriend until he starts asking her about a scary movie. That is when the ambient music switches to a discordant sound creating more suspense and worry

Mise-en-scene Techniques:

The lighting in this scene gives off more of a low light look creating shadows and having a more calm and eerie setting. For the outfits and makeup, Tara is seen to be wearing a light pink long sleeve, blue skinny jeans, and black converse. This outfit gives off a more casual vibe, like she just got back from whatever she did during the day and is winding down before getting ready for bed. As for her makeup it looks as if she has little to no makeup on, if she does, it would be some light black eyeshadow or mascara to make her eyes a tad darker, and a light coat of foundation to give her face a clean and smooth look to it. When observing the setting and different props, I noticed it was in an average neat home with props like pictures, silver wear, kitchen wear, phones, pill bottles, chairs, a bowl of fruit, plants, and a bookcase with accessories and decorations which Tara is seen to get keys off the top shelf of. These elements of Mise-en-scene are used to create the idea that Tara lives an average life until most likely whatever happens in this movie.

Production and Distribution:

The Scream movie was made in 2022 and is apart of the scream film series which is part of a sequel with the first movie being made in 1996. The 5th movie is considered to be in the Horror and Thriller genre and was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. This movies budget was around $24 million dollars. However this sequel was financially successful and has made about $138,874,789 worldwide. The newer Scream 5 movie has been able to pick up production companies such as Spyglass Media Group, Project X Entertainment, Outerbanks Entertainment, Lantern Entertainment, and Radio Silence Productions. Along with these successful production companies its many distributors were Constantin-Film, Forum Hungary, NOS Audiovisuals, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros Pictures, B&H Film Distribution, Central Partnership, Odeon, United International Pictures, Paramount Home Entertainment, and Paramount+. The Scream 5 film cinematographer was Brett Jutkiewicz which also helped in the filming of Ready or Not, Stranger Things, The Black Phone, and various other popular films.

Opening Credits Description:

In the opening credits of this movie, we see a video with the song Scream (Birds Fly) by Soho heavily playing in the video. In the beginning of the opening credits it zooms out on the word Scream and then shows a clip of a blue flag waving in the air with a yellow circle and a type of animal inside it and says Woodsboro High School around the ring of yellow. This camera angle slightly moves over to show what I'm guessing is Woodsboro High School based on the flag, then throughout the video there are small clips showing a short video of each actor that play a role in the Scream 5 movie, and it pictures the actors names (not their characters names) on the screen. For the Scream movies, they all use the same font for the title on their posters which is Futura Extra Bold in white lettering with all letters being capitalized. However, each of the movies released have used a sort of M at the end of scream that dips down making a longer v shape in the middle of the letter to create a more chilling effect. This opening credit scene has attempted to use the same font as each of the movie titles for each of the actors names they display. The actors names displayed in this video are Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ammar, featuring Marley Shelton, with David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell, all listed in order. Then at the very end of this video it states the movie was created by Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven, and the executive producers are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. All of these letterings in the video were in the same font, except when the video says "featuring, with, and, created by, executive producers." These words are in the Newman Rough font with white lettering in uppercase.

Week 9: Finishing on Adobe

This week on Adobe I worked to completely finish the editing portion of the film project. Olivia was able to find audios to go with the film, so I imported the audios and placed them where I thought they would be good, and where Olivia had suggested putting them. I also needed to figure out with the audio how to adjust some clips. So, I asked Mr. Z how and just learned how to audio gain on certain clips. I adjusted the sound on the music I imported to be louder in some areas or be quieter in order to hear the original audio at the same time. Also, with sound in the same clip being louder I could either take the eraser tool and snip that portion then adjust the audio gain, or I had Mr. Z show me how to adjust the sound of one part of a clip by dragging points into the sound and adjusting those points, which was smoother than just snipping it. After this, to make the audio smoother I included exponential fades into the audio to either fade the sound in or out. I...
