Week 4: Production Process + Reflection

On Monday 2/19 we had school off, so I picked up Olivia and her sister Brie to start filming at around 2:00pm and we went to the store to pick up a cake and frosting for the film. Then we went and picked up Taylor, Lizzie, and Alyssa to help us film. Olivia was the main director this day with assistance from me, and Brie, Taylor, Lizzie, Alyssa, and my godmother were the actors. Lizzie was the main character (Ivy), Brie was Ivy's sister (Willow), my godmother was Ivy's grandma, then everyone else was Iv's best friends. So, Taylor was Harper, Alyssa was Scarlett, and Haylee (me) was Amber. We spent until 5:00pm filming with everyone and got a little over half of our filming done. We were able to shoot the birthday scenes, party scenes, and bathroom scenes, and even attempted to film the scene of Ivy and her friends sneaking out of the house. Then throughout the week we began putting together our scenes that we were able to film on adobe and started editing them. I was the coordinator for our editing process while Olivia was available with any ideas on what to film next, or if any changes should be made to the project. I was able to edit all the scenes in order to help with our next filming day on what we still needed to film, and if there were any mistakes that needed fixing during our last filming day.

We then decided to film once again on Friday 2/23 in which we were able to record any scenes in my house that we had missed. I drove all of us after school to my house to film a scene we missed on Monday where my godmother (Ivy's grandma) said goodnight to Ivy, her sister, and her friends. We also filmed a scene where the camera faces towards a clock and watches as the time changes from 6:59pm to 7:00pm. Unfortunately, the light was too bright when Ivy and her friends snuck out, so we had to refilm that scene of them leaving the house. After re-recording that scene, we decided to head towards the abandoned building which used to be a dog racing academy located near Booker High. This is where the rest of the movie (not just the 2 minutes) would be located. Upon arrival, we had already explored the location on Wednesday 2/14 (Week 3) in which we did not film at all, just used it to get to know each other, get everyone's outfits, and checked out our locations. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we realized we had forgotten flashlights and Olivia's outfit which she would be portrayed as "the killer" in one of the future scenes. Because of this we decided to only film the scenes where Ivy and all of her friends were lined up outside of the building, and we used our phones in place of the flashlights. At first their backs were facing towards the camera while they looked at the abandoned building. We did this to try and get and establishment shot of the building while showing the characters. This then cuts into the front of the characters looking at the abandoned building. The lighting was also dark, but not dark to the point it was almost pitch black and the sun was gone, this was so the audience could see not only the characters, but the abandoned building as well.

Overall, I would say our filming days were a success, especially Monday since we were able to film most of our scenes. The only downfall we had with filming in week 4 was on Friday since we needed to re-record, or record scenes we had forgotten. Also, it was unfortunate that we had forgot flashlights and Olivia's outfit not allowing us to record the rest of our scenes that day. There also was a point on Friday night at the building when Olivia was a tad upset since her sister Brie and Lizzie kept running off and doing their own things at some moments, so they Olivia and Brie were silent on the way home, but to ease the tension we all stopped for frozen yogurt on the way home. Other than those small moments we had a blast filming and got quite a bit of work done!

Week 9: Finishing on Adobe

This week on Adobe I worked to completely finish the editing portion of the film project. Olivia was able to find audios to go with the film, so I imported the audios and placed them where I thought they would be good, and where Olivia had suggested putting them. I also needed to figure out with the audio how to adjust some clips. So, I asked Mr. Z how and just learned how to audio gain on certain clips. I adjusted the sound on the music I imported to be louder in some areas or be quieter in order to hear the original audio at the same time. Also, with sound in the same clip being louder I could either take the eraser tool and snip that portion then adjust the audio gain, or I had Mr. Z show me how to adjust the sound of one part of a clip by dragging points into the sound and adjusting those points, which was smoother than just snipping it. After this, to make the audio smoother I included exponential fades into the audio to either fade the sound in or out. I...
